Literary Architecture

As a writer, I have to take architecture into account when creating worlds. I often wonder if readers think about how much authors put into it – many draw up blueprints, either by hand, on a computer, or even hire a professional artist. Some map out whole worlds, carefully placing land and water precisely where we need them.

If you think back to your favorite stories in literature, you’ll find an amazing array of beautiful architecture. Lucky for us, some of most iconic displays have been gathered into a clever collection in this info-graphic, Homes of Classic Literature. I found it truly fascinating.

I’ve been given generous permission by the author to share the graphic here, but please click the above title or even the graphic below to offer your polite support for the hard work.

My special thanks to Sneha for sharing this!

Genre(s): Science Fiction, Space Adventure

Description:In year 2343, the galaxy receives a deadly wake-up call.

Nearly three-hundred years have passed since humanity ascended to the stars, joining with a conglomeration of alien races all living under the rule of a single, united community—the United Galactic Coalition—a joint, multi-species alliance that upholds the principles of democracy, freedom, and equality for all races.

The Milky Way Galaxy’s future looks bright …

Until a research team uncovers a mysterious crystal buried deep beneath the surface of a frontier world on the edge of settled space. This discovery proves to be the catalyst for an invasion from an unknown alien force that is just as ruthless as they are mysterious.

As the races of the galaxy are catapulted into a vicious fight for their very survival, fate hastily throws together a legendary admiral with a dark past, a brilliant scientist with precious little time to find the answers, an elite Special Forces Operative who must come to terms with a past failure, a spunky young military officer for whom this war is a baptism by fire, and a top notch Marine who will discover a truth that will define him as a hero.

These five men and women hold not only the keys to their own survival, but the survival of their entire civilization. With the clock ticking, the race to uncover the truth begins. As they try to fend off this cruel and merciless alien foe, this handful of soldiers must discover what secrets this crystal could hold that would be worth the destruction of all life in the galaxy. But the question is …

… can they do it in time?

Description: “As a student reading classics had a profound effect on my creativity, imagination and writing skills. When I started teaching from the first year of college, I introduced classics to my students.  I implemented the same techniques and methods of teaching with my students and saw the difference in them. I taught English Literature and English Language besides History to the students of the 9th and 10th grade at a prestigious ICSE school in Mumbai, and followed the same methods of teaching. I have a B.A. degree in History and Sociology and a B. Ed. Degree in Education, my special subjects being English and History. I wish to share my knowledge, techniques and methods of teaching with Parents, Teachers and students. With the aid of this small book, I want to propagate the importance of classics to everyone, every student, parent and teacher. Through this book I shall introduce to you the various classics that have influenced me, the different skills one can develop by reading good literature and how sometimes good fiction makes reality a lot more tolerable.”

About the Author

Author Fiza Pathan

Fiza Pathan was born in Mumbai, India on 19th of March 1989 to Iqbal and Philomena Pathan. She finished her high school education from Bombay Scottish School, a reputed ICSE School in Mumbai. She then attended St Andrews College to pursue her BA degree in History and Sociology and graduated with a first class. She later graduated with a first class from the St Theresa’s Institute of Education, Santa Cruz as a teacher her special subjects being History and English. She has taught History and English in Lilavatibai Podar Senior Secondary School (ICSE) to the Senior students. Being literary minded from a young age Fiza participated in and won many competitions at College in essay writing and short stories. She was an active contributor to various Christian magazines like ‘The Examiner’ and ‘Vision and Venture’. She has won many scholarships and awards in College in History and Literature as well as in Hindi, the national language of India. She has not only been the Deanery Youth head of her neighbourhood, Bandra parish but also the Diocesan Youth Female Head for the Archdiocese of Mumbai from 2009 to 2010. She lives with her maternal family and writes novels and short stories which includes almost all genres, Religious writings being her forte. She has been ‘adopted’ by two stray cats who answer to the names of Lopez and Brownie.

Fiza is the author of three books. Her first book ‘S.O.S. Animals And Other Stories’ was written in her college days and published in August 2012. These are stories which reflect the parables of everyday life played out by our friends from the animal kingdom. In the words of Father Joshan who reviewed the book for the Examiner, Mumbai “’SOS Animals and other Stories’ is a beautiful expression of faith through the eyes of a believer, in a manner both different and unique. The language is simple and lucid, yet enticing and appealing at the same time. The book can be used as a veritable resource book for catechesis and moral development. The stories in this book can also be used as a simple read for daily reflections.”

From then on Fiza did not look back. She followed this with a collection of short stories for Christmas ‘Treasury Of Bizarre Christmas Stories’. Were they different from other Christmas Stories? Yes, they specifically written to attract those children who preferred horror stories and yet needed to get a dose of value based stories.  As the synopsis explains: From creepy dark catacombs to a haunted winter wonderland, this treasury brings with it, a mystical side to Christmas and the birth of a legendary baby. Whether deep in a forest of India or back in time in Bethlehem, ‘Treasury Of Bizarre Christmas Stories’ brings to its readers the holy, the Almighty, the haunted, the obsession, the innocent, the magical and the reason to celebrate.

There is a story behind the making of her third book ‘CLASSICS: Why we should encourage children to read them’. In middle school Fiza was feeling the difference in the teaching methods adopted by her teachers. She lagged behind in studies until she came across a beautiful classic. From then on Fiza never lacked for friends. Her language skills, creativity, imagination and grades improved so that she cleared her tenth-grade with a distinction. She adopted the very same techniques in college and graduated in Arts with a first class in History and Sociology. She repeated her performance when she was learning to be a teacher. She shares her journey with classics, what classics have done for her and what it can do for you in her latest book. M. Virany reviewing the Kindle version for Amazon said: “I found this book great fun and motivational to read and think others will too. Fiza Pathan states her case with passion, personality and precision.” “This book is only 90 pages long but can do a lot to rejuvenate not just literacy but humanity also.”
