Welcome to
Don’t be shy – ask questions, critique characters and plot points, tell me who you love and who you hate.
I only have a few rules for this discussion:
(1) Be nice. We all have opinions and they’re all different for different reasons. Respect that.
(2) Have fun! That’s why I made this page.
(3) This isn’t so much a rule as it is a suggestion: if you want to get the latest updates to this “forum”, make a comment and check the box that says “Notify me of new posts via email.”
Please know that I have the right to add new rules at any time.
And on that note… HAVE AT IT!

/ June 13, 2012When, when, when is Book Three out?
M.S. Fowle
/ June 13, 2012Hopefully in the next week or two. I want to be absolutely sure it’s ready. I recently went back into it to play with some dialogue that I wasn’t comfortable with and I’d like to give it another read through before sending it out into the world.
Don’t worry – you’ll be the first to know. And since you’re the first members of The First Sermo, you will be receiving a FREE COPY… for review, of course.
easyondeyes
/ June 13, 2012Yaaaayy!!! I should be free by then with family visiting me past few days. Also, I know you will ignore if I ask, and so I hope there’s more on how the Chimeras are made.. like how Alex’s sister is surviving all of that, and yes a little more love for Alex and Zede
M.S. Fowle
/ June 18, 2012Care for a sneak peek of Book Three? -> http://msfowle.wordpress.com/2012/06/18/the-lucky-7-meme/
M.S. Fowle
/ June 14, 2012Let’s talk characters…
Excluding Alex and Zeke, who is your favorite character and what about them is so appealing?
easyondeyes
/ June 18, 2012Sorry for the delay, been having guests at home, making it difficult to cope with everything…
I like Bade! Something about him makes you want to know him more closely… He is so in your face! Hahahaha … I love people who don’t beat around the bush!
M.S. Fowle
/ June 18, 2012I like Bade too
He’s so stubborn
easyondeyes
/ June 19, 2012Represents someone you know?
M.S. Fowle
/ June 19, 2012Mmmaybe
easyondeyes
/ June 20, 2012Who? Who?
M.S. Fowle
/ June 20, 2012There’s definitely a bit of my husband (and myself) in Bade. We’re both pretty stubborn, but we still know what’s important. Bade is a lot like that – he was raised to hate humans, but he’s so loyal to Zeke that at least tries to learn to trust them. Plus, even as loyal as he is, he’s the only one who dares to question Zeke.
easyondeyes
/ June 20, 2012Oh, nice! I had a feeling it would be your husband, but you too?
I am glad, though he hates the humans he still supports Zeke, and doesn’t act like a pain in everyone’s a**!
You know you don’t really like his attitude towards the humans but you can’t stop yourself from liking him… sigh!
M.S. Fowle
/ June 20, 2012He’s definitely got that whole “bad boy” appeal
easyondeyes
/ June 18, 2012P.S. I love the cover for Book Three <3
M.S. Fowle
/ June 18, 2012Thank you
easyondeyes
/ June 26, 2012I DEMAND BOOK 4, NOW!!!!
easyondeyes
/ June 26, 2012If I may ask, how many books more? (Just give them all to me at one go! )
M.S. Fowle
/ June 26, 2012Book Four will be the final installment…but it’s not finished yet
Remember that post I made about being unorganized? It was about Book Four. I’m working my butt off to get it done, though – I promise you.
(You’re done already? LOL You rock!)
easyondeyes
/ June 26, 2012Oh no! It’s over with Book Four? I want to cry. Well, thank god, you have a password to this discussion. If my FIL gets to know that I din’t go out with them because I wanted to read the book, he’s not going to be a happy man. But yes, I have read it! Yaayy! I am not going to say anything here yet – wait for the review tomorrow! Yay!
M.S. Fowle
/ June 26, 2012Awww – you ditched a guy to read my book? I’m so flattered!
And triple YAY for tomorrow!
easyondeyes
/ June 26, 2012Hahaha! Not just any guy – my Father In Law – FIL!
M.S. Fowle
/ June 26, 2012Forget flattered – I’m honored!!!
easyondeyes
/ June 27, 2012LOL!
M.S. Fowle
/ June 27, 2012I like what you said about the title: The First War – about how you thought it would contain more battles/war, but it didn’t. The title was actually more to reflect the deeper reasons for the war with Odin – why Alex fights, what Zeke fights for, what Odin is up to, who wants to get what out of it.
easyondeyes
/ June 27, 2012Well, I am glad atleast there was a mini war with both of them bombing each other at the same time. BUT – why, why haven’t those two even kissed yet! :’(
M.S. Fowle
/ June 27, 2012There was a kiss at least
easyondeyes
/ June 27, 2012They have? I missed it! :’( Nooooooo! I am going to read it again!
M.S. Fowle
/ June 27, 2012I said “there was a kiss” – not my fault if you don’t remember who LOL
easyondeyes
/ June 27, 2012Hahaha! No wonder I don’t remember it! Since you deprived your readers through three books, we are hoping for complete action in Book Four
(Btw, check out Paula’s comments on the review
)
M.S. Fowle
/ June 27, 2012love it! hahahahaa!
M.S. Fowle
/ June 29, 2012NEW TEMPORARY RULE!!!
No talking about Book Three until Paula catches up!
paulaacton
/ June 30, 2012Okay I am here hehehehehehe will be downloading book three this afternoon so I promise to read it quickly. Now as I said in my review of book two this seem to have gone horribly wrong since this Yale character entired the story mentally I have decided either drew or huey were bought off to pass information. now if it was drew he is dead but ifs its huey….I was just a little suprised neither Will or Alex or actually bade given how suspicious he is mentioned this
easyondeyes
/ June 30, 2012Actually come to think of it – I had a feeling something wasn’t right somewhere. And now that you pointed out to some people, I have a feeling it has something to do with Yale. But yet again, why would he do it? What could be his motive? And yes Paula, you need to read Book Three as quickly as possible and then we have some serious talking to do with Mel!
paulaacton
/ June 30, 2012The other thing that struck me is the idea of her sister being used for breeding chimera’s now unless the gestation period is about two minutes surely they gotta have whole warehouses full of women used to breed but it does sound a little like it is just her the way i read it
M.S. Fowle
/ June 30, 2012*walks by whistling*
Oh, hey guys!
paulaacton
/ June 30, 2012*Jumps on Mel pinning her down so she can’t escape while i read book three* Morning
paulaacton
/ June 30, 2012So Mel how long is a chimera gestation? Can the human carry more than one at a time?
M.S. Fowle
/ June 30, 2012Questions to be answered in Book Four
(sry)
paulaacton
/ June 30, 2012Awww spoilsport I got squillions of questions lol Okay i got one that surely we can discuss…..You decided to create the first cities underground how would you explain they have not been discovered in this modern age when subways etc are dug under so many cities
M.S. Fowle
/ June 30, 2012I watch a lot of discovery channel and they have a series that explores underground civilizations. They said there are hundreds in eastern europe that have probably never been found yet. Most of europe is a city on top of a city on top of a city. I love weird stuff like.
easyondeyes
/ July 1, 2012Oh no! How did I miss this conversation? Hahaha, Paula, don’t get off her yet! Mel should just wait till we throw all the questions at her, so she can answer all of them in Book Four!!
And wow – city on top of city – I think I should just head towards a new career – dig up the underground cities! So cool!
M.S. Fowle
/ June 30, 2012Lol
M.S. Fowle
/ July 4, 2012Welcome to our latest member, arhart79! (I think I know who it is, but I’m no good at guessing…)
(Hurry up, Paula! We’re getting new Sermo members!)
easyondeyes
/ July 4, 2012Welcome arhart79!
M.S. Fowle
/ July 4, 2012You know, I was looking at The First War on Amazon today and thought, “Aw, you just look so lonely sitting there with no reviews for all to see. But don’t you worry. Someday. Someday.”
easyondeyes
/ July 5, 2012Oh damn! I wish I could – but amazon is just being mean!
M.S. Fowle
/ July 5, 2012??? They let you review the other two books and now they’re being jerks about it? I can email them if you need me to. At least there’s one on Goodreads.
easyondeyes
/ July 5, 2012Well, like I mentioned earlier – I need to have bought anything from Amazon to be able to review anything on their website. And, I don’t have any purchases made. And after that they send me a mail maybe because I downloaded a few free ebooks for the kindle. And through that mail I could review only the first two books. I tried reviewing Nora’s sun too – din’t work. More like, I need to wait for their mail. But yes, if you could mail them and tell them to relax their stupid rules, then a lot of people will be happy
And Goodreads, yes will do it soon!
M.S. Fowle
/ July 5, 2012Yeah they slow. Ill try to remember to email them when I get home. Its no biggie. I’m just happy u guys like The First so much
easyondeyes
/ July 5, 2012No but still, you deserve to be promoted. Like I told Sharmistha, I wouldn’t mind buying your book when it comes to it!
We loved it!
M.S. Fowle
/ July 5, 2012But you shouldn’t have to. Book bloggers post reviews all the time without buying the book. A corporation shouldn’t MAKE ppl buy something so they can post reviews (on something else no less). So basically if u buy a pack of pens off amazon then u can review my book that u got free? Its crap
Jamie Stites
/ July 9, 2012So uhmm yeah… After finishing all three books in 2 days I can officially say I’m in love with this entire series….. I only have one complaint….. Will…really??? WHY?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!?!
M.S. Fowle
/ July 9, 2012LOL I’ve been waiting for someone to yell at me about that one. I think it was more about stripping Alex of everything she’s ever loved – that despite how strong she is on the outside, she can’t protect everyone. What happened to Will was an accident that she couldn’t have stopped or prevented. Because she looked on him as a brother, losing him was like losing her sister all over again, leaving her bare and vulnerable – opening the door for Zeke to show true compassion. You’ll learn more about what happened to Will and why in Book Four.
And keep the questions and complaints coming – I love those too!
And thank you so, so much for reading! I love that you’re in love Alex and Zeke’s story!
Jamie Stites
/ July 9, 2012I kept waiting for Will to walk back in all scratched up and be all, “ha ha ha I got you!”… I will admit I cried for Alex.. I could NOT stop reading these books.. I would finish one and immediately start the next… When I got to the end of book 3 I actually kept hitting the page button on my kindle because I didn’t want it to be over… So book 4 needs to hurry hurry hurry… In fact why are you reading this?? Go write!!! LOL
M.S. Fowle
/ July 9, 2012I am! I am! I promise!
And don’t break your Kindle – you’ll need it for Book Four
paulaacton
/ July 9, 2012Am not reading comments I promise Mel I just needed to scream I hate Drew SLEAZEBALL there it’s out of my system I can go back to editing for an hour before my next reading break
M.S. Fowle
/ July 9, 2012rofl!
easyondeyes
/ July 10, 2012Hahahahaha Paula!
paulaacton
/ July 11, 2012Am finished gonna write review then will see you in here to deal with Mel
paulaacton
/ July 11, 2012Right Ms Fowle i have finished and am not happy with you….you made me cry…sitting on the bus..with an old lady next to me giving me funny looks as to why I was sniffing with a tear running down my face!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
M.S. Fowle
/ July 11, 2012Aww :*( Well, if you cried, then I must’ve done something right. Like easyondeyes said – no one is safe in my books.
And I apologize for making you cry on the bus, but not for writing what I wrote the way I wrote it.
paulaacton
/ July 11, 2012you could have warned me I needed tissues thats what you should do for a give away with book three free pack of kleenex
paulaacton
/ July 11, 2012right now I can really start I really dislike drew I have to say that he gives me the creeps big time and I am now convinced he is the spy in the camp. am fascinated by the way the chimera are evolving scary but fascinating, Alex, I wanna climb in the book and bash her and Zeke’s head together and now you went and killed Will (okay I get you wanted to strip her of everything) who is gonna give Zeke decent advice instead of Drew’s posionous whispers. Bade is growing on me after him saving the little girl I may even be developing a bit of a crush on him rather than Zeke he does seem to be learning emotions a little quicker
M.S. Fowle
/ July 11, 2012Bade is my favorite, actually.
Hmmm…should I kill him next?
paulaacton
/ July 11, 2012NOOOOOOOOOOO Drew must die!!!!!!!!!!!
paulaacton
/ July 11, 2012So Msssssssssssss Fowle let us discuss science and your diobolical chimera production ideas? How much science research did you have to do into craniotomys, labotomys and dna replication and manipulation?
M.S. Fowle
/ July 11, 2012Umm…haha…I hate science. LOL! Actually, I read and watch a hell of a lot of science fiction, and I made the internet my best friend – finding articles about cloning and bio-engineering. It does help that both of my parents are in the medical field and my older brother is a Super Nerd. But I really don’t like studying science. “Research” (as you call it) isn’t like studying it in school. I’m not obligated to make it to Lab on time, or ever. Since it’s for a story or a book I’m writing, I don’t consider it work and I actually find it interesting. I compare Odin to the way asylums used to be run (up until all not that long ago, by the way) – treating their patients like lab rats for their sick experiments.
I just write my story, and when I get to something “technical”, I seek the answers I need.
paulaacton
/ July 11, 2012I guess thats why I like the medieval period no science only alchemy! is Reed Jr based on your brother then?
paulaacton
/ July 11, 2012Not that I am suggesting your brother is an evil genuis of course
M.S. Fowle
/ July 11, 2012He’s probably a little evil in his own way LOL But actually, Eddie is more like my brother than Reed. He’s all about computers… and Star Wars.
paulaacton
/ July 11, 2012Okay its bedtime here in the UK so am gonna leave you with a few more questions to answer hehehe you mention book 4…will the story continue or is that the end? Do we get to know more about the first way of life? Maybe some prequels on the history of the first? you have told us a little (very little uh humm) about the class structure of the first but do they have a religion as such they do sort of grieve over loss maybe not as human do but it does bother them do they believe the soul goes on or just ends? Are you starting to wish you hadn’t given me the password yet? lol I have a million and one questions that am gonna ask now
M.S. Fowle
/ July 12, 2012I’ll start with your last question and say: only slightly.
As for your other questions… be mad at me if you must, but you’re just gonna have to wait for Book Four. I will say that I love that you have so many questions. It shows me how engrossed you’ve become with the story, maybe even a little obsessed, and I’m extremely flattered. I get that way about Stephen King books. Book Four will explain some of what you’re wondering about, but probably not all. I wish I could explain why, but I don’t want to give anything away.
There is a reason why I don’t talk too much about First culture. I’m telling the story of Alex and Zeke, only showing the reader as much as they know about the First. Alex is human, so she knows very little. Zeke, though he’s First, is a clan warrior. In Book Two, at the end of Chapter One, Alex and Zeke talk about their pasts. Zeke says, “The training of a warrior is total isolation. We’re only taught to fight. That was why it was so difficult for me to convince others to trust humans, even a select few.” When you think about it, he probably knows as much about First culture as Alex does.
Ulka references this fact again in Book Three. In Chapter Three, she confronts Alex about how Zeke can hear her blood, how he drank from her but didn’t kill her. “No warrior of the clans is permitted to commit such an act… The clans are not even allowed to know of its existence.” Makes you wonder what else a clan warrior is “not even allowed to know.”
paulaacton
/ July 12, 2012Hmmm you are very good at avoiding straight answers if you ever decide to give up writing I think a career in politics awaits you lol I am this bad with every book I enjoy Stephen king was lucky I didn’t have access to him when I was younger aswell (I would actually double back through books set in castle rock picking up on continuity errors for characters lol) Actually you have Anne Rice to blame for most of the questions her vampire chronicles are my favourite altime series so I do tend to like to compare belief systems etc as she over the 20 or so books (counting the witch series which merges) created very vivid systems of belief for different characters. Now lets try to think of a question you might answer hmmmmm at the end we get Will appearing in a dream morphing into father Koen do YOU believe in life after death and do you think your personal beliefs influence your work?
M.S. Fowle
/ July 12, 2012Actually Will didn’t morph into father koen. Alex was forced a memory of him with what will said cuz it was something koen would’ve said. (Maybe I need to reword that part). But I do believe we go on after this life – maybe we’re just a ball of energy floating around I’m not sure. But I don’t like the thought of us just winking out into oblivion when our time comes.
Ines
/ July 12, 2012Hello, just got the password and I’ve been reading all that has been said. Love, love, love the books and can’t wait till book 4. I think Will is still alive. He mentioned so many times that he wanted to infiltrate in the Odin Company. I also think Drew is the mole. There is a part where Zeke entered the office and found Drew at the computer and he slyly made some entry to turn it off. Ohhhh how I am waiting to read book 4 to see if I’m right. M.S. Fowle your talent is heavenly – I also was surprised when I finished “The First War” I just wanted to keep reading!!! I’ll be looking out for “The First Sermo” May I ask why “Sermo”? What does it mean? And is it referring to a new character?
M.S. Fowle
/ July 12, 2012Hi Ines! Welcome!
I’m workin’ on it, though – I promise!
Sermo means “discussion” in Latin, a common language for the First.
Thanks so much for reading! And I can’t wait for Book Four either!
paulaacton
/ July 13, 2012CRacks whip at Mel write girl, write damn it lol
Jamie Stites
/ August 3, 2012Ines I really hope you’re right about Will… I miss him.. =(
paulaacton
/ July 13, 2012Of all the countries you have mentioned in the book have you been to any of them (other than the states lol) if not which would you most like to visit
M.S. Fowle
/ July 13, 2012Actually, I’ve NEVER left the states. I’ve never even been to Canada, and it’s right next door. LOL I have been to a few different places around the US. Atlanta, Georgia was probably my favorite – they have this underground shopping “mall”. Another city on top of a city. Up top, it’s all modern and busy. But below, it’s cobblestone streets, little shops with creaky hardwood floors, and sidewalk vendors. My least favorite was Los Angeles, California. The sky was brown from all the smog, it smelled like a paper mill, and I was paranoid my dad and I were gonna get carjacked on the freeway in our rental car. But Universal Studios was fun – it was December, so next to no one was there. And we were running around in shorts and t-shirts while everyone else was all bundled up. (Bunch o’ babies!)
Before I die, I would love, love, love to go to Ireland, though it’s not a country the Hunters go to in the books. If I were to pick a place mentioned in the books, I would go with London (where the team was headed at the end of Book Three.)
paulaacton
/ August 3, 2012Cmon mel we need some teasers for book 4 have finished writing mine so got lots of time on my hands to bug you now while I play the waiting game, cmon are we at least right there is a mole then we can rip the books apart agruing over who we think it is
M.S. Fowle
/ August 3, 2012Obviously you missed rule number 2.
Alright alright before u cross an ocean just to kick my butt… Lets see, we have a new and very interesting character (a few new chars, but you’ll love this one), someone else has fallen for Alex (and why not), and a crucial character has a deep dark secret that will change everything for our MCs (and no, nothing about this supposed “mole” u all keep talking about). Thats all u get. Deal with it.
paulaacton
/ August 3, 2012Look you cant blame a girl for trying well we know the little kid fell for Alex and he is going in a pupil with her but i reckon he is too young to be a real contender there, have sneaky feeling that bade mayhave developed a soft spot for her or vito now that could be interesting if his master wont step up maybe the young pup will hehehehe
M.S. Fowle
/ August 3, 2012Actually you havent met this character yet. I have a question for YOU now: how much of an accent should i portray for my British characters without being insulting or annoying? I was a bit mild with seth in book 3 but i have some newbies in book 4. We get a hint of alex’s new england accent, but i didnt go overboard because she only lived in Boston til she was 8.
paulaacton
/ August 3, 2012That will depend very much on where they are from in UK and what social standing they have the accents here are probably even more varied than US believe it or not and different places would certainly be expected to have certain dialectal influences
M.S. Fowle
/ August 3, 2012Ill just keep it mild then. I know there are differences but i dont know enough about origin and social standing. Its kind of like that here in Maine – the higher the class the more often they actually use the letter R
Thanks Paula!
M.S. Fowle
/ August 8, 2012So, I’m literally just a few pages away from finishing Book Four. Unfortunately (well, not really…) it’s just me and the little one today, so I have to wait until nap time to work on it. It’s far more depressing than I thought it was going to be, finishing it I mean. It’s rather bittersweet – I’m happy that I’ll be able to edit soon and be done with it, but also sad that it’s coming to an end. I know Paula wants prequels or more sequels, but just thinking about that is going to have to wait. (I jokingly considered just dropping a nuke and destroying the entire world so I wouldn’t have to worry about it. Haha! Don’t worry – I restrained myself.)
It’s my favorite out of all of them – I just love how so much emotion can come from a statue.
Once The First is done, I NEED to work on something else – something totally different. I love Alex and Zeke and the rest of the team, and I hope they continue to find new readers everyday. But my brain is about ready to pack up and move out in protest.
So, in the meantime, I’m revealing the cover of The First Light (Book Four) to my fellow Sermo delegates before all else. (I’ll probably show the rest tomorrow or Friday.) Just scroll up to have a look.
I hope you like it!
paulaacton
/ August 8, 2012Seriously I do understand you needing a break and wanting to explore other stories I just think you have such a great series here that you could do so much with it, but it has to be written when you have the heart for it I love the new cover it fits perfectly with the rest
easyondeyes
/ August 14, 2012Alright, so we have been away for quite a long time and I (Sapna) had to move from one city to another which took up so much of my time and energy and the internet connection also got delayed. Now that I am back, I DEMAND to know the status of Book Four! Mel, I loved the cover! Saw it on my phone and wanted to comment, but then thought I will do it when I have all the time. When do I get to read it? I think I am going to read the previous three just to be ready for the latest one. So how much time do I have?
M.S. Fowle
/ August 15, 2012Well, I’m not very good at setting deadlines for myself because my schedules so hectic. But Book Four is in editing, so you might want to start reading.
And welcome back!
easyondeyes
/ August 15, 2012Thank you! Yay! So cool! I shall begin reading then!
M.S. Fowle
/ September 10, 2012I’m just waiting to see who finishes Book Four first…
Can’t wait to hear what you think!
easyondeyes
/ September 14, 2012I am getting there…half way through… so far – loved, loved, loved it!
M.S. Fowle
/ September 14, 2012Wait til the end when i drop a nuke and kill everyone! Jklol That might piss ppl off.
Jamie Stites
/ September 18, 2012Just finished The First Light….. Oh my golly woman you almost made me pee myself…. I was doing happy dances all over the place while I cried… So while you have regained my love I’m not very patiently waiting to see what your next project will be…lol =)
Jamie Stites
/ September 18, 2012(since it’s so early I figured I wouldn’t post any spoilers yet….. But I have to say I KNEW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!)
M.S. Fowle
/ September 18, 2012ROFL! Thanks so much! So glad you liked it!
paulaacton
/ October 26, 2012Hmmm still only half way through but had to say I KNEW IT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I said Drew was a sleazeball she should have shot him in the balls
M.S. Fowle
/ October 26, 2012Hahahha! Too funny! Only reason she didnt was because she still saw him as a teammate and she rly doesnt like killing ppl if she doesnt have to. But that doesnt mean he didnt deserve it – she just knew it wouldnt change anything. Zeke knew this too.
