Artful Distractions

Yesterday, my husband took the boy for a walk in the field next to our house so I could get some cleaning done. It was a fair trade. When I got done, I let the dog outside and heard a bunch of crows pitching a fit. That was when a fox popped up out of the woods and started heading towards the field. Following my first instinct, I yelled at it, hoping to scare it off. But it just looked at me for a few seconds and trotted off into the field. I quickly called my husband to warn him. Luckily, he and the boy were at our gun-loving neighbor’s house. They hung out and watched the fox take off across the road and into the woods on the other side. Needless to say, I was quite happy to see my boys come home safely. But I did spend the rest of the afternoon checking the perimeter of our backyard while I played with my son, considering how I could use his foam baseball bat as a weapon, if necessary.

But I digress…

I made this last week, more so to get my mind off things. I had asked my watchers on Deviantart which stock to manipulate next and it ended up as a three-way tie. But this adorable little girl had gotten the most votes first. I had tried a totally different concept, but it just didn’t come out the way I had hoped. So, I started over and ended up creating Road Trip

Slow Transition

Transitioning from Nichole’s story will be a slow and delicate path. I will certainly keep updating everyone on the trial that has yet to start. Kyle Dube will be indicted next week and we will see if any bail will be set. I highly doubt it will be one that he or anyone in his family will be able to meet. At that time, the public is hoping to see what’s in the affidavit that’s been impounded since his arrest – the details of what he told police and, hopefully, some answers as to what happened that night. The documents were sealed because of the public’s reaction to the case. There is a lot of anger around here and a lot of threats have been made towards Dube. I understand their hatred. What I don’t understand, and frankly find appalling, are the threats being made towards his 4-year-old daughter. She has NOTHING to do with this. Even Nichole’s family has pleaded for the threats to stop.

As some of you know, I have lived in Maine my entire life. I live just a few towns over from where this all happened. I grew up near where Dube was living. The entire state of Maine is like one small town – everyone knows everyone. Rumors are like the air we breathe. We are all neighbors.

That being said, I did not know Nichole. She had mutual friends with my niece and I couldn’t help but think of my niece every time I saw her picture, one of the reasons I got so caught up with her story and wanted so desperately for her to be found safe and sound. I had hoped she had just runaway and was hiding out at some friend’s house, too scared to come out once so many people started looking for her. I wish had gotten to meet her.

Instead, the shock hit me full force when authorities announced that they had made an arrest and Kyle Dube’s photo appeared on my computer screen. I couldn’t breathe. I couldn’t think. I can’t even count how many times I had met Dube, spoke with him, sold him parts for his Jeep or his father’s truck. He was a regular customer at the auto parts store where I work – 3 to 4 times a week over the past few years. He would make his purchases and then just hang out and talk shop with everyone. He’d bring in his little girl and we’d all say something silly to her to make her laugh. I had never seen him get angry, even if someone ordered him the wrong part or if something he’d bought was defective. He’d just smile and say, “It’s no big deal.”

I am angry and ashamed. I want to erase the fact that, if my car had broken down on the side of the road and Dube stopped to offer me a ride, I probably would’ve accepted. I want to be able to look at someone and know what kind of person they are. I want to have a conversation with someone and know if they could hurt me or someone I love. With him, I couldn’t. Nichole probably felt the same way. So many others that know him felt the same way. A monster should look like one.

My sweet stepmother said, “Only God knows why some people have evil in their hearts.”

I wish it was easier for the rest of us to see. But we strive to see the good in people, because that’s what we want to see. So that’s what I’ve been trying to do, even if it doesn’t help me understand. I see all the people rallying in support of Nichole’s family and all they’re doing to memorialize and honor her. [Click to see the article.] The Nichole Cable Memorial Fund has been set up at People’s United Bank to help other families of tragedy. There will also be a spaghetti dinner on May 31st to help raise money for the fund, followed by a candle light vigil. A local print store, The Workshop, is making shirts and stickers in Nichole’s memory and donating all the proceeds. Members of the Keep Your Light On For Nichole Cable group on Facebook has been an outpouring of love for Nichole and her loved ones, and we’ve all kept our porch lights for Nichole.

In response to a fellow group member having her dedication image removed due to copyright violation, I created the image below for others to use to write their messages of love to Nichole. Feel free to do so, if you’d like.

As I said, I will be slowly transitioning from Nichole’s story, but will continue to update you when new information is made available. Normalcy will be hard to find around here for a while. Everything that’s happened has been a wake-up call for everyone. PLEASE – educate your loved ones about the dangers of social media. Your “friends list” should only contain people you actually know. Check your privacy settings. DON’T use those check-in features – it tells the whole world where you are and what you’re doing. Turn on your cell phone, go to your Settings and turn OFF your “Location” – it tracks you everywhere you go.  Be mindful of what you post online. And, if someone is acting inappropriately towards you or someone you know, get screen shots (press the “PrtScn” button on your keyboard – usually located near the upper right corner, above the “Insert” key – open a simple “Paint” program, paste, and save) then contact authorities and report them. All of this should be common practice for anyone using the internet to socialize and communicate.

Take care of each other, my friends. And continue to keep Nichole and her loved ones in your hearts.

xoxo

Editing and Art

Well, I’ve got about ten pages to edit on my WIP – YAY! Then again, who knows when I’ll get to it again? I’m hoping to chip away at it tonight, but I’ve been getting distracted a bit lately. Even with commissions closed on Melchelle Designs, I’m still being asked to make custom book covers. And I have a hard time saying no, especially when it’s an author pal I’ve met through my blog. I can’t say no to you guys–you’re awesome!

The wedding this past weekend was great! I’m so happy for my brother-in-law. And my son was so adorable in his tie–which he kept calling a bow, making him even cuter.

Check him out…

No–no pics of me yet. I took a million photos with our phones, but NONE OF THEM CAME OUT! They were all blurry. So, I’m waiting for a few people to email some of their photos to me.

But I have uploaded a few new pieces to My Artwork, if you’d like to see.

This one, Forest Fae, used A LOT of stock and took what felt like forever to finish. I honestly can’t remember if I’ve shown you this one or not…

Lady Valentine was made for a contest. I didn’t win, but it was still fun to create. The hair actually bothers me–it didn’t come out how I wanted…

One last thing and then I’ll leave you alone.

A while back, I made a custom book cover for Out of Darkness by author Jason D. Morrow. He liked it so much that he asked me to redo the covers for his trilogy, The Marenon Chronicles. Initially, we had planned to create all new artwork, but things just didn’t work out that way. So instead, he got permission from the original artist for me to give his covers a makeover.

The covers in the top row are the originals and the bottom row are the enhanced versions…

Okay. The boy is napping right now, so I’m going to attempt to finish those last ten pages of my WIP. Wish me luck! ;)

I’m Lurking

I feel like I’m abandoning you all here. I certainly don’t mean to. A few things have been keeping me busy.

My son, who is three, is priority number one. The husband and I have been working with him on letters and numbers, and I’ve been TRYING to teach him how to write his name, or at least part of it. He’s all about drawing the number 1, probably because it’s only a straight line. We’re actually testing him to see if he’ll be ready for preschool this year or if we should wait until next year. His birthday puts him on that cusp of age, so we have to figure out when he’ll be ready. Then again, the school will want to have a say as well. I don’t want to start him early because he’s knowledgeable enough only to have the system want to hold him back merely based on his age. It happens a lot around here. They’re more worried about their social development. A friend of mine is actually pulling his 8-year-old daughter out of school after this year to home school her. The kid was doing fractions two years ago, but the school refuses to bump her a grade because they’re afraid the older kids will make fun of her. Now, I have heard of the things that come out of this precious girl’s mouth–her parents are NOT worried about her being picked on.

Home schooling our son is still on the table for us. I have trust issues–not so much with teachers, but with the other parents. Our problem is we’re a bit anti-social, so we don’t know any of the other parents in the area. That is why I’ve been looking into the local summer recreation program organized by the school. It would help him make friends, and I can scout the other parents as well as their kids. And if we do choose to home school, the rec program would still be available to us so my son will still be able to socialize and learn all those life skills he’ll need in the future.

In addition to the boy, I’ve been kind of overloading myself with book cover art projects. I’m working with a few authors to make covers for their entire series, so that’s definitely keeping me busy. And I’ve also been rolling out some new premade ebook covers for Melchelle Designs. If you’d like to take a gander at all my latest additions, it’d be best to view them in my Book Cover Gallery on Deviantart.

I’ve been trying to decide on a favorite, but it’s a tie between these two…

Finally, as some of you know, I’m trying (desperately) to edit my next book, one I’m hoping to pitch to agents and/or publishers. When I first started reading through it, I felt like I was torturing myself. The story was born a few years ago, written for someone special in my life. At the time, she was too young to read it, but I was hoping to be finished by the time she was old enough to enjoy it. My main character (MC) is a brooding teen with a punk-like style from Boston by the same name. Now that she’s about the same age as my MC, it’s almost eerie how much they resemble each other–their looks, their attitude, etc. But, just as I started editing, some crazy things started happening in her real life that caused us all quite a bit of worry. Things are getting better, but it was hard to repeatedly read her name over and over and over.

Then, the bombings happened in Boston.

A line from the first page of my book…

The whole city embodied a certain kind of pride, like nothing could break it.

Who else would shut down their entire city to find one person?

I would like to add that I’m loving all the little side stories that are coming out now, like the officer who brought a mother two gallons of milk for her young children during the lock down.

Feel free to share some with me in a comment below…
