Today I am delighted to welcome the very talented M.S. Fowle to present a guest blog, talking about her experiences with the KDP Select program. Please take the time to check out her work and her blog. Many thanks Mel – take it away!
From May 11th to the 13th I gave away the first two books of my novellas series, The First Night (Book One) and The First Blood (Book Two), for free through the KDP Select Program. Enrolling in KDP Select means you promise to sell your book(s) exclusively on Amazon.com for three months while (theoretically) receiving better exposure and the ability to run your own book promotions. You’re allowed to offer your books for free for up to five days within the enrollment period. From the various posts of other authors who had tried this, I gathered that they were relatively pleased with the results, but more so for unknown authors. So I decided to give it a try. I figured I had nothing to lose. And I didn’t, really. All I have put into this e-book endeavor is my time. Yes, yes – time is money, but it’s different when you’re working for yourself.
Going into the Select Program, I didn’t expect too much. I was ready to total about a hundred downloads a day and ended up with about 600 by the end of my three day promo. But as I read more and more blogs and threads of other authors who had done a similar giveaway, I’m realizing my results would be considered dismal. And you know what? That’s okay. It doesn’t really bother me too much. Of course I’m a little disappointed, but it’s given me hope as well.
